This is an introductory class for students with little or no experience who are interested learning the basics and fundamentals of sketching and drawing. Each week there will be an instructional focus covering the use of pencils, fine line pens, colored markers, and perhaps watercolor, with demonstrations and in class practice. We will use objects, print images, and what’s available on site, as subject matter and reference materials. Instruction may be adapted to the goals and interests of the class participants. Projects covered might include still life setups of blocks & objects, the human face & figure, rural & urban landscapes, fauna & flora of the natural world, and abstraction, including an overview of the elements of line & form, tone & texture, value & contrast, composition, proportion, and perspective. My emphasis will be on encouragement to address and quiet self-criticism so that you can enjoy the process of slowing down, improving your observational skills and mark making abilities, all the while developing and refining as a process, not as an end goal of perfection. Students will attain a greater confidence while learning and practicing techniques that can be built upon into the future, translating into creating and playing in a way that is uniquely your own. A supply list will be provided upon registration and supplies are not included in the cost of the workshop.
Please note that our classes are typically held in the lower level of Arlene’s. Because access to the lower level is available only by stair, please let us know if using the stairs presents any difficulty for you in advance of the class so we can make alternate arrangements. We want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy and participate in our classes.
