Chris’s Short Take: Salsa Latina in East Greenbush
I don’t remember the girl’s name, but her boyfriend’s name was Brutus. Or at least that was what was tattooed across his throat. When my friend and I walked into Mother’s Roadhouse, a truly iconic biker bar on Rt 4 in East Greenbush, and struck up a conversation with a young lady at the bar, Brutus and his friends felt we would be more comfortable elsewhere. We agreed, and I never returned until this week. But I’m glad I did. Salsa Latina moved into the space.
Salsa Latina on Central Ave in Albany has been a great place for all kinds of Latin food since it opened, so when I heard they were expanding to East Greenbush, I was looking forward to it. I did have some reservations concerning their opening a new place during a pandemic, in a location (Mother’s Roadhouse) that hasn’t exactly enjoyed the greatest of reputations, but I think Salsa Latina may just be a Phoenix rising from the pandemic ashes. The decor has been highlighted by art from the owner’s hometown in Mexico. A spacious covered patio and tons of parking have transformed this place completely, and people have discovered it. Everything from Maseratis to pick-up trucks lined the parking lot. Is it eclectic? Yes. My wife and I dropped in for both dinner and lunch and saw similar menus for the corresponding meals from the Central Avenue location. That’s good news for Rensselaer County. Let’s talk menu.
The house margarita was tasty, not sicky sweet like the usual, but really refreshing. The salsa was fresh salsa crude, and the chips were hot on arrival. Our server, José, was a cordial man from the Dominican Republic who helped us with our pitiful attempts to speak Spanish, and really steered us in every right direction. The Chili Poblano came to the table perfectly brown, bubbling with queso in a nest of chicken flavored rice and refried beans. My wife’s Tex Mex Quesadilla was overstuffed with stuffed with chicken, cheese, and spinach, and was served with lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and guacamole. It was just plain old fun! Looking for something fancy and formal, this isn’t it. Want to go have fun with a real cross-section of folks, and have some tasty Mexican? My wife and I are the couple in the corner with the margaritas… just ask José.
