Viva Flamenco! La Guitarra Flamenca, with Maria Z
Maria Zemantauski continues her program on flamenco guitar music with live music and hands-on flamenco toque instruction and demonstration available online through the Albany Public Library. Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you bring a guitar or not!
Viva Flamenco! Part 1, An Evening with the Artist on March 18th (for all ages)
There are 3 elements that comprise a flamenco performance: cante (song), baile (dance), and toque (guitar playing). Professional guitarist/composer Maria Zemantauski will guide you through the music and rich history of flamenco and its lively, unconventional cultural heritage. Hear beautiful examples of flamenco guitar music live from Maria, and from videos of past virtuosos.
Viva Flamenco! Part 2, La Guitarra Flamenca, on March 25th (for adults and teens)
Maria will offer hands-on instruction of flamenco-style guitar and show how it differs from classical-style guitar. This is open to all, whether you play along with your guitar, want to learn more, or just enjoy listening to flamenco.
Guitarist/composer, Maria Zemantauski, has performed in Spain, Italy and across the continental United States to great acclaim. Her five cd releases, including the self-titled, Maria Zemantauski (2018) have received stellar reviews from music critics around the world. With an MA in Anthropology, she is a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities. In addition to her performing career, Maria is on the faculty in the Department of Fine Arts, Theater Arts & Digital Media at Hudson Valley Community College, where she has been the Coordinator of Cultural Affairs since 2004. www.mariazguitar.com
Note to Guitarists: A nylon string guitar is required for playing flamenco. The guitar can be a classical, flamenco or even a ‘hybrid’ guitar. If you don’t have a nylon string guitar, you’ll still be able to try the techniques, but you’ll quickly realize why nylon strings are essential.
Registrants will be emailed a zoom invitation for this program.
