For the Attic Classic, put on your boogie shoes. All through the 70’s right into the 80’s there were nightclubs and discos playing the hottest dance hits, the throbbing beats spun by DJ’s off 10- and 12-inch extended play records. But there were also bands playing those funky r&b and soul pop grooves from club and lounge stages for their audiences listening and dancing pleasure.
CAKE was one such band. They were originally known as “Mixed Company,” based on being a racially mixed band. They changed the name after lineup tweaks finally gave them the sweet ingredients they’d been after. CAKE recorded a single in 1979 with Art Snay at Arabellum Studios in Colonie, released on Key Records.
Over the years, interest in the songs, which mimicked the sound of hits of the day, kept popping up world-wide. In 2017 the pair that had written the songs, Bob Treffiletti and Bobby Zampino, signed a record company contract, making fresh copies available once again.
Time to knock off the rust on your late-night dance moves. Thrust a hip, point to the sky with CAKE’s “Make Up Your Mind,” the ‘A’ side to their 1979 single.
