Sly Fox spreads “That Spirit of Christmas” with a Ray Charles holiday classic
Editor’s Note: The following message comes from a pillar in our local music community, Gary “Sly” Fox. Sly isn’t just the bandleader of The Hustlers, a successful regional blues-rock band, he also manages one of the few remaining venues (Putnam Place) that showcases original, local musicians. For that… we are eternally thankful.
Happy Holidays to you!
I hope all is well with you during these crazy times! My band, Sly Fox and the Hustlers, is in the studio completing a CD for a spring 2021 release and I decided to record a Christmas tune to try and spread some love this season. I’m releasing it today, Thursday, December 17th, along with the snowfall lol! I think it’s a great fit to get you in the mood for the holiday season.
A little bit about the song… I’m one of those people that loves Christmas music, especially the classics but this one is my favorite! I’m a huge Ray Charles fan and it’s a cover of his song, “That Spirit of Christmas.” What makes it stand out to me (among all the great Christmas songs) is the soulful message of the song with an emphasis on spirituality, love, family, and trying to sustain those good vibes throughout the year!
A few fun facts about the song and artwork… The song is played in National Lampoon’s Christmas movie when Clark is in the attic. The artwork for the song is me (and my sister) on Christmas morning at 5yrs old with my first guitar! I hope you enjoy it!
Wishing you and your family a great holiday season and happy New Year!! I can’t wait to get together for some live music and a drink in Spring 2021!!
