Stories from a Bar #37, Dave Gardell of The Ruck
In the latest episode of Stories From A Bar, I have the pleasure of sitting down and having a beer with Dave Gardell, owner of The Ruck a local landmark in Troy, NY. Dave has been at The Ruck since it first opened back in 1998. From working the door to moving behind the bar, to eventually taking over as owner which he has been for coming up on 16 years.
Hanging out in The Ruck’s 3rd floor above ground man cave Dave and I sit a socially distant six feet apart as he tells me about how he ended up in Troy and his journey with The Ruck. While there have been several accomplishments in The Ruck’s history what Dave finds the most pride in is having been there from the beginning. “I got to grow up with The Ruck as an individual. All my friends and my customers we got to grow up with The Ruck and then The Ruck itself got to grow up with us.”
Dave’s passion for craft beer and supporting the community is also evident throughout the episode. We also cover him graduating from the Brewing program at local college SCCC, to teaching his own classes, and an amazing story of him putting up his own credit card to bring in a trailer of crowler cans for distribution to breweries all over the Capital region.
