1777: American troops defeated British forces in Saratoga Springs. It was the turning point in the American Revolutionary War.
1888: The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was released at newsstands.
1931: Al Capone was convicted on income tax evasion and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
1933: News-Week (later to become Newsweek) appeared for the first time at newsstands.
1939: The film “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” had its premiere.
1945: Ava Gardner and Artie Shaw were married.
1957: The Elvis Presley film “Jailhouse Rock” premiered in Memphis.
1960: Dion & The Belmonts’ breakup became official when it was reported in Billboard magazine.
1964: Manfred Mann’s version of “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” (written by Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich) hit No. 1 in America for the first of two weeks.
1967: The rock musical Hair premiered at New York’s Public Theatre. The show ran for 1,758 performances.
1977: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s album Street Survivors was released. Three days later Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and road manager Dean Kilpatrick were killed when their plane crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi.

1979: Mother Teresa of India was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
1980: Bruce Springsteen’s The River was released.
1998: “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies hit No. 1 in the US, where it stays for… one week.
2000: At a charity auction organized by Mick Fleetwood in London, singer George Michael pays 1.5 million pounds for the upright piano on which John Lennon wrote “Imagine.”
2001: Jay-Z was sentenced to three years probation after he pled guilty to misdemeanor assault charges for stabbing a record producer during a fight in a nightclub on December 1, 1999.
