iTheatre Saratoga Presents Two Radio Dramas in October
As theatre productions are more or less cancelled for the time-being, iTheatre Saratoga wanted to create something unique for Capital Region listeners. They will be releasing two radio dramas with full casts this October, an example of alternate routes theatres are taking to create art in the midst of a pandemic.
iTheatre Saratoga is revisiting its celebrated historical play, A LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW with a consortium of Capital District theatre arts organizations. Broadway and film veteran Jeff McCarthy leads the cast as the legendary Aaron Burr and will be supported by iTheatre Saratoga’s acting company of professionals and Broadway veterans including Tony Award winner Ron Holgate. The ensemble also includes players from a handful of regional companies. It’s an original work written by iTheatre’s artistic director (Mary Jane Hansen) which delves into the back story of how Washington Irving came to write the famous story, with a fair share of regional history, mystery, and the supernatural— a great fit for the Halloween season.
Here is a synopsis of the original radio drama: The discovery of headless remains in the woods outside of Sleepy Hollow reawaken the superstitions and fears of the village. Washington Irving assists Aaron Burr and his associate Clara in defending Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt, who may be responsible for the death of Ichabod Crane some 20 years earlier. Is there a murderer in their midst or could it be the spectre of the headless horseman?
The cast of 25 includes players from Lake George Dinner Theatre, The Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY, Theatre Voices, The Ghent Playhouse, Sand Lake Center for the Arts, and Contemporary Circus & Immersive Arts Center, as well as iTheatre’s core company of local and Broadway veterans. All actors were recorded individually due to pandemic-related safety concerns. The radio drama is a benefit for iTheatre and its collaborators from the area arts organizations listed above.

KUNSTLER is a two person drama focused on the career of controversial civil rights attorney William Kunstler written by Jeffrey Sweet. iTheatre Saratoga/Creative Place originally produced the play Off-Broadway in NYC and subsequently at Barrington Stage in the Berkshires to enthusiastic audiences a few years back. The radio drama features Broadway’s Jeff McCarthy as Kunstler and Keona Welch as Kerry. The play, directed by Meagen Fay, deals with many of the social justice issues that are all too current. KUNSTLER will be available for download later this fall.
iTheatre Saratoga fully produced the projects with sound design and original music for a true “theatre of the mind” adventure. iTheatre’s creative team have done a number of these style recordings in the past and have even won Audie Awards (the big audiobook award) for their work in the medium. The group is currently in talks with stations for a late fall radio broadcast.
iTheatre Saratoga’s goal is to provide publicity (along with a share in the proceeds from audio downloads) for all the theatre companies involved, as well as keeping the theatre arts alive at a time when live performances are either inaccessible for audiences or unfeasible for many regional operations.
