Playhouse Stage holds virtual fundraising drive until Oct 18th

As arts organizations and venues continue to struggle with being unable to welcome audiences due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, Playhouse Stage Company will launch a multi-week virtual fundraising campaign titled ‘A Spotlight in the Dark.’The campaign will run from Oct. 8 and culminate on Oct. 18, taking place across all of the Playhouse Stage social media channels.

This campaign aims to highlight the exceptionally wide reach and breadth of services offered to local communities, many of which have been adapted to being presented virtually during the pandemic.

“Audiences know our Broadway style productions at Park Playhouse in Albany’s Washington Park well,” said Producing Artistic Director Owen Smith. “And they are certainly aware that those productions had to be cancelled this year.” Smith continued, “Our ‘Spotlight in the Dark’ Campaign gives us an opportunity to talk about how much more we have to offer than just those productions, though. We’ll be talking about education and outreach programs that many folks in our audience likely aren’t aware of, and how we’ve worked hard to keep those programs going despite the shutdown.”

Alongside videos telling the company’s story, Playhouse Stage will also offer several free online events as part of the campaign. On Monday, Oct. 12, at 7:30p.m., the company will partner to present an event with Quarantine e-Theatre, a group founded by local theatre artists to create local performing arts experiences online during the shutdown.

Quarantine e-Theatre will also present a filming of the Playhouse Stage production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. While the production was critically acclaimed at Cohoes Music Hall, it was ultimately closed due to the pandemic. The Quarantine e-Theatre screening will give audiences who were unable to see the production live the chance to view it online for free, and to hear a talk back from the cast and company members.

The Spotlight in the Dark Campaign will culminate with a capstone performance, The Spotlight Cabaret, hosted on the Playhouse Facebook page at 7:00p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18. This finale to the campaign will feature performances by actors associated with productions past in Washington Park and the Cohoes Music Hall, as well as current and former Playhouse Stage students.

Throughout the campaign and its associated events, the Playhouse will link patrons to the donation portal on their website and urge their support. Through a partnership with Broadway Booking Office, Playhouse Stage will honor donors who contribute $250 or more with a free three-month subscription to Broadway HD. Broadway HD is a Netflix-style streaming subscription service that provides professional Broadway plays and musicals for enthusiasts to stream in the comfort of their own homes.

“We are excited to give our patrons a chance to support their local Playhouse, while also giving them the opportunity to enjoy some of the best of the theatre industry from the safety of their homes this fall and winter.” Smith said. “It is our goal to raise at least $25,000 during this campaign, and we hope this unique partnership will help us achieve that mark.”
