LIVE: Trifecta @ Jazz on Jay, Schenectady, 7/16/2020
July 16th marked the opening day for the 2020 season of the Saratoga Racetrack. In this strange year is no opening crowd there, but there is a Trifecta that played in the early afternoon in Downtown Schenectady in front of Johnny’s at the corner of Jay and State.
No, there weren’t thoroughbred horses but there was a trio of local virtuoso keyboard players who entertained the audience for free.
With Rob Lindquist leading Dave Gleason and Wayne Hawkins, this trio of very accomplished performers each with long resumes on the local scene entertained the audience with the wide variety of styles that have come to be known collectively as jazz. The set varied from originals to standards to contemporary standards such as Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage” to Chick Corea’s “Armando’s Rumba”. Stride piano was demonstrated along with swing and gospel. Each musician got a chance to showcase themselves with some solo performances.
With today’s advanced electronics other instruments such as trumpets and violins were mimicked through Wayne’s skills. Bass and drums were not missed.
The series continues on 7/23 with the Jeanine Ouderkirk Quartet.
