1897: The first annual Boston Marathon was held.
1939: Connecticut approved the Bill of Rights for the U.S. Constitution after 148 years.
1945: The musical “Carousel” opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre.
1975: The Raspberries split up.
1978: Patti Smith released the single “Because the Night.”
1982: NASA named Sally Ride as the first woman astronaut and Guion S. Bluford Jr. as the first African-American astronaut.
1988: Sonny Bono was inaugurated as the Mayor of Palm Springs.
1994: At age 20, Nas released his landmark debut album Illmatic.
2002: Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley was discovered dead in his Seattle apartment after police broke down his door to investigate reports that he was missing.
2008: The first Record Store Day was held to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store. Metallica officially kicked off the first event at Rasputin Music in San Francisco.
