Best of 2019: Chris Shaw’s Restaurant Picks
I have seen some great years for food in the Nippertown Region, but none better than this one. Not just a few great plates, but a plethora of them!
Best New Restaurant
Quang’s Vietnamese Bistro
88 3rd St, Troy, NY 12180
The food is consistently outstanding, and the menu development continues with the addition of Bahn Mi. Let’s hope the unfortunate lack of a liquor license resolves itself quickly. Hot Pho on a cold day…get down there people!
Iron Gate Cafe
182A Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12210
The setting, and the front of the house enthusiasm, together with a playful menu push this venue into the top spot this year. Oh…and the Bloody Mary’s ROCK!!!!
Best Family Food Outing
Rick Bedrosian’s NYC Food Tours
See Rick’s TV Food show, “I Could Eat!”:
It may take some coordination to clear the whole family’s calendar, and a little budgeting for this one, but it’s worth the effort and every penny! A personally guided tour of the legendary eats in the Big Apple! Don’t over think it, just do it!
River Street Market
433 River Street at The Waterfront, Troy, NY ·
Between the Copper Pot, Maria’s, the Hatch Test Kitchen, Luka’s, Stack’s Coffee, Prime Burger and Shakehouse, and soon to be added Pizza by the Mazzone Group if you can’t find what you want here, I don’t know what to tell you. Great space on the water with plenty of parking across the street.
The Olde English Pub
683 Broadway, Albany, NY 12207
In the true spirit of pubs in the British Isles, you’ll find no big screen TVs in this establishment. Just great English food, a stunning beer list, and an amazing authentic atmosphere that just happens to include my favorite outside space in the city.
dp An American Brasserie
25 Chapel St, Albany, NY 12210
The Purnomo’s sit at the top of the hill this year, with superior culinary offerings by their stunning kitchen staff, and a warm and inviting atmosphere! One of two looks coupled with the legendary “Yono’s” in adjoining dining rooms, if you love food you owe it to yourself to enjoy this! Now that the Michelin have expanded to Westchester, can their first star be far behind?
Places to watch in 2020
Here are a couple of places that have either opened later in the year, or are opening soon. Great places to look out for in the coming year.
17 Division St, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
Chefs Mike and Shelly Spain have opened their own restaurant after being a part of the Druther’s team locally. An open fire/kitchen concept together with a farm to table philosophy will be the subject of a future review.
433 River Street (9.15 mi)
Troy, New York 12180
The top floor of the Hedley building has been under construction for a while now and is due to open as a catering venue with the best rooftop view in the Capital District this January. (Perhaps a rooftop bar scene in downtown Troy?)
