Recto y Verso Editions is proud to announce the opening of the inaugural exhibition, Tom Koken, at the new location at 41 State Street, Suite 103, in downtown Albany. On October 24, the gallery will host a press and private collectors preview from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and the official public opening from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.

“The growth of art in Downtown has been astonishing and eye-catching,” said Georgette Steffens, executive director of the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District. “As we continue to grow as Albany’s newest neighborhood, the addition of Recto y Verso highlights the world-class amenities we continue to welcome.”

This solo exhibition features recent works by New York-based painter Tom Koken, whose work has been described as luminous and cerebral with a unique emphasis on deriving from nature and patterns, using techniques of deconstruction and assemblage of known subject matter to create a new visual form.

“I’m interested in a delicate balance of opposites. All kinds of opposites – chaos vs order, boredom vs excitement, beauty vs dullness, foreground vs background, representational vs abstract, flatness vs. dimensionality,” Koken explains.

Koken was born in St. Louis, MO, studied at Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO and received a BFA with honors from School of Visual Arts, NYC. Selected one-person shows include: Separate, MKG127, Toronto; Phantom Limb, MKG127; Separate Light, Kaufman Arcade, NYC; Sragow Gallery, NYC; E.S. Galt Gallery, St. Louis, MO; Artist’s Space, NYC, Group Show–Member’s Gallery, Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo, NY; Animal Life, One Penn Plaza, NYC; and Gold, Art Advisory–Museum of Modern Art.
