1902: In Hartford, Theodore Roosevelt became the first president of the United States to ride in an automobile.
1906: The Victor Talking Machine Company of Camden, NJ began to manufacture the Victrola, a hand-cranked unit, with horn cabinet, which sold for $200.
1932: The BBC began its first TV broadcast in England.
1938: Count Basie recorded “Jumpin’ at the Woodside.”
1956: Elvis Presley began work on his first movie, “Love Me Tender,” originally titled “The Reno Brothers.”
1964: Martha & The Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Streets” was released.
1968: Cynthia Powell Lennon sued John Lennon for divorce on the grounds of adultery.
1970: Derek & The Dominoes began work on their first and only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
1973: Henry Kissinger was named Secretary of State by U.S. President Nixon. Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year.
1984: The last Volkswagen Rabbit rolled off the assembly line in New Stanton, PA.

1985: Rick Nelson and Fats Domino begin filming the PBS-TV special “Rockin’ with Rick and Fats,” which turned out to be Nelson’s last television appearance before his untimely death in a plane crash.
1986: Kerr-McGee Corp. agreed to pay the estate of the late Karen Silkwood $1.38 million to settle a 10-year-old nuclear contamination lawsuit.
1989: Nolan Ryan became the first major league pitcher to strike out 5000 batters.
1997: Tim Weisberg sued former partner Dan Fogelberg for alleged breach of contract and fraud over the recording of No Resemblance Whatsoever.
2003: A Norwegian Elvis impersonator named Kjell Bjornestad sets a new world record by performing 26 hours of Elvis songs.
