THEATER: Charlie & the Chocolate Factory @ Proctors, Schenectady. It’s opening night! Yes, it’s the story of Willy Wonka, world famous inventor of the Everlasting Gobstopper, who has just made an astonishing announcement. His marvelous — and mysterious — factory is opening its gates…to a lucky few, and that includes young Charlie Bucket, whose life definitely needs sweetening. 7:30pm. Through Sunday.
FILM: “Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration” @ Proctors’ The Addy, Schenectady. A concert tribute to the singer-songwriter featuring Brandi Carlile, Glen Hansard, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan, Diana Krall, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos with La Marisoul, Cesar Castro & Xochi Flores, Graham Nash, Seal, James Taylor, Rufus Wainwright and more. 7pm. $12.
THEATER: Friend of a Friend: Tales of the Underground Railroad @ Proctors’ GE Theatre, Schenectady. This original docu-play, developed by Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill and Jill Rafferty-Weinisch, used New York State archival documents to bring to life the impact of the Fugitive Slave Act in Greater Nippertown and the tales of several local people, including former slave Solomon Northup and Albany’s Harriet and Stephen Myers, who produced an anti-slavery newspaper and risked their freedom to be conductors on the Underground Railroad. 10am. $11;students $9.
OPEN MIC/STORYTELLING: Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs.
OPERA ON SCREEN: La Traviata @ Proctors, Schenectady. Richard Eyre’s beautiful Royal Opera production provides the perfect setting for Giuseppe Verdi’s opera about a courtesan who sacrifices all for love. 2 & 7pm. $15.
