LIVE: The Chuck Lamb Trio with Valery Ponomarev @ Caffe Lena, 11/14/18

Valery Ponomarev

Review and photographs by Rudy Lu

The November edition of the monthly jazz night at Caffe Lena featured the acclaimed Russian-born trumpeter Valery Ponormarev. Heavily influenced by Clifford Brown, he eventually joined Art Blakey & The Messengers where he played in the late ’70s, and since then has accompanied Junior Cook and Charles McPherson, as well as playing with his own ensembles.

A charming man with a tremendous sense of humor, he is a strong believer in audience participation, and he quickly had the audience clapping along to the music. The ensemble – featuring Chuck Lamb on piano, Jeff Siegel on drums and Rich Syracuse on bass – played two sets, primarily focused on such standards as “You Stepped Out of a Dream,” “Autumn in New York,” “Byrdlike” and “Speak Low.” Everyone left the Caffe with a smile.
