LIVE: Carla Cooke @ The Linda, 10/19/18
Review and photographs by Andrzej Pilarczyk
Carla Cooke is the youngest daughter of the legendary singer Sam Cooke, who had a string of chart-topping soul hits in the 1950s and the 1960s before his untimely death in December, 1964 at the age of 33.
Her performance at WAMC’s The Linda in Albany last month featured Cooke’s amazing voice expertly performing two memorable sets that night. The first set was all Sam Cooke songs and featured many evergreens from her father’s rich catalogue, including “Twistin’ the Night Away,” “You Send Me,” “Chain Gang,” “Another Saturday Night” and “Bring It on Home to Me.”
The second set (with a costume change during the brief intermission) featured a mix of cover tunes and several originals. The jazz standard “Summertime” and a brilliant rendition of the classic Bacharach/David show-stopper, “Walk on By” were among the many impressive standouts of the evening.
After the show ended, Carla Cooke came quickly out of the dressing room to warmly greet everyone who took the time to come out and see her and her band perform. She posed for photos and signed autographs on her A Time to
All-in-all, a wonderful performance by a very talented lady.
