9/12/18: Today’s Top Tips: Wednesday
MUSIC: The Brubeck Brothers Quartet @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Drummer Dan Brubeck and bassist-trombonist Chris Brubeck recorded together for the first time more than a half-century ago. These days, they’re joined by keyboardist Chuck Lamb and guitarist Mike DeMicco. Expect an evening of straight-ahead jazz with a few curveballs along the way. 7pm. $47.
DANCE: Mary Armentrout Dance Theater @ EMPAC at RPI, Troy. “Listening Creates an Opening” focuses on how various types of technology impact our physical experience of moving through the world. By inviting the audience to move with the performers through a variety of environments, the performance explores what types of histories and contexts reveal themselves from a consciously embodied perspective. Local artist Jack Magai serves as the guide, leading the audience from a small living room in the turn-of-the-century Off Campus Commons building at Rensselaer, to the highly technical theatrical setting at EMPAC, and down into urban sites in Troy, ranging from a parking lot to a hair salon, to experience the hills at sunset and the Hudson River at dusk. 5:30pm. $18; student & senior $13. Through Saturday.
MUSIC: The McKrells @ the Little Theater on the Farm, Fort Edward. Fresh from the Donnybrook Fair reunions, Kevin McKrell steps back into the spotlight with his namesake band. 7pm. $10; students & seniors $7.
MUSIC: Michael Benedict’s Jazz Vibes @ Empire State Plaza, Albany. The four-piece ensemble’s performance will feature straight-ahead jazz standards, Latin American songs and original material. 5:30pm. FREE.
