RIP: The Alt, 11/15/16-9/5/18
The last issue of The Alt was published today.
A joint venture owned 40 percent by The Daily Gazette and 30 percent each by Proctors and Overit, the Schenectady-based alternative news and entertainment paper debuted on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 with a cover story about Greater Nippertown singer-songwriter Girl Blue.
Sadly, The Alt never made it to its second anniversary.
Over the course of the 22 months of its publication, The Alt was often in a state of flux – losing many of its initial contributors, shifting publication day, reducing distribution, hiring Tracy Strann as publisher in February and in April paring back publication of the print edition from weekly to every other week.
It will be missed. However…
The Alt’s editor David Howard King will be at the helm of a new monthly glossy publication, The Collaborative, slated to debut in November. Published by Proctors Collaborative with Proctors’ director of marketing and corporate relations Jim Murphy as publisher, the new magazine will focus on the Local 518 arts scene with a circulation of 10,000.
“We’re going deeper behind the scenes, exploring all things related to the creative economy,” King said in a press release from Proctors. “This is a Capital Region magazine devoted to artists, to cultural organizations and to arts patrons.”
