MUSIC: JD McPherson @ the Hangar on the Hudson, Troy. Imbued with the spirit and energy of the early days of rock and roll, McPherson and his rollickin’ band return to The Hangar for another two-night stand in support of their latest album, Undivided Heart & Soul. MUSIC: The Autumn Defense @ Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield. Longtime Wilco multi-instrumentalists John Stirratt and Pat Sansone have been playing together in their spare time as the indie rock band the Autumn Defense ever since the idea struck them 18 years ago in New Orleans at the end of Wilco’s Mermaid Avenue sessions with Billy Bragg. MUSIC: “Anthracite Fields” @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. The Bang on a Can All-Stars and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street perform Julia Wolfe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning composition with visually stunning projections by Jeff Sugg. Anthracite Fields draws on oral histories, interviews, speeches, geography, local rhymes and coal advertisements to create a work honoring the region’s people who persevered, endured and fueled a nation. 8pm. $22 & $36; students $12.

PERFORMANCE ART: Tim Youd’s 100 Novels Project @ the Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany. The 100 Novels Project is an ongoing performance art piece in which Tim Youd retypes novels from beginning to end in locations that play a central role in the novels. Employing the same make and model typewriter used by the author, he types each novel on a single sheet of paper, which is backed by an additional support sheet. The artist loads the two-ply paper through the typewriter repeatedly, until the entire novel has been retyped. Upon completion, the two pages are separated and mounted side by side as a framed diptych, recalling two pages of an open book with the words obscured. Youd will be re-typing “Ironweed” by Albany author William Kennedy. 12noon-4:45pm.
