Surf’s up! Three surf-rock bands will be playing at the Franklin Alley Social Club’s Luau Block Party in Troy’s Franklin Alley (behind the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall) on Friday evening (July 20). The beach bash/block party, which will kick off at 5pm featuring music by The Jagaloons (from Albany), the Men in Gray Suits (from Canada) and Black Flamingos (from New Jersey), as well as cocktails, food and plenty of fun. Admission is free.
They’re back! Yes, those metal monsters of mayhem GWAR are ready to step back into the spotlight at the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park on Wednesday, November 7 in support of their album, The Blood of Gods. Kicking off the 8pm show will be Miss May I and American Sharks. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday (July 20, priced at $20 in advance; $22 at the door. Tickets are also on sale now for the double-bill of Escape the Fate and Slaves with Famous Last Words, Picturesque and Set to Stun at UCH at 6:30pm on Sunday, September 23. Tickets are $17 in advance; $20 at the door. And Dirty Heads are comin’ back on Saturday, October 20 with openers Just Loud. Tickets are $30.50 in advance; $32 at the door.
The sublime singer-songwriter Jill Sobule is headed into Woodstock for a concert at Colony at 8pm on Thursday, September 13. Tickets are now available, priced at $17 in advance; $20 at the door.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The line-up for the inaugural Dirt Farmer Festival at Arrowood Farms in Accord just got a little juicier with the addition of a new batch of performers, including Jackson Browne, Grammy-winning soul singer William Bell, the Fab Faux’s Jimmy Vivino and the London Souls’ Tash Neal.
If you missed superb singer-songwriter Chris Smither at his recent Greater Nippertown appearances at Lake George’s Shepard Park and the Green River Festival, you’ll have another chance to check in out in person when he returns to Club Helsinki in Hudson at 9pm on Friday, December 7. Tickets are on sale n ow, priced at $25 in advance; $30 at the door.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Following their opening set with the Tesdeschi Trucks Band at SPAC earlier this month, the Marcus King Band are headed back to Greater Nippertown this fall for a concert at the Cohoes Music Hall. Ida Mae opens the show. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10am on Friday (July 20). Also, the Comedy Works series at CMH will feature Kevin Farley, Tim Meadows, Todd Barry, Kurt Metzger, Lynne Koplitz’s Hot & Bothered Tour and the First Night of Funny.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: In support of her new album, Binary, Ani DiFranco is slated for a return to The Egg’s Hart Theatre with singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey opening the show. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 11am on Friday (July 20).
Buffalo-based jam band faves Aqueous are slated for a return to the Hollow Bar + Kitchen in Albany at 8pm on Saturday, October 27 with Mungion opening the show. Tickets go on sale Friday (July 20), priced at $14.
The Wood Theater in Glens Falls has announced the Comedy Works’ Comedy Series including Saturday Night Live alum Tim Meadows (September 29) and Gilbert Gottfried (November 24), as well as Lynne Koplitz (November 10).

Down-and-dirty, boogified rock ‘n’ rollers Low Cut Connie are slated to invade Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock at 8pm on Friday, August 31 in support of their fifth album, Dirty Pictures (Part 2). Priced at $25 & $40, tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday (July 20).
Also down in Woodstock, the Bearsville Theater welcomes back tribute band Groovin’ with “Return to the Summers of Love” at 9pm on Saturday, August 25. Tickets are $20, $25 & $30, and the show is a benefit for the Veterans Miracle Center in Albany.
SOLD OUT: Thursday’s (July 19) concert by Patty Griffin at Club Helsinki in Hudson is now official sold out… At Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, the following four shows are now officially sold out: Unbroken Train featuring Phil Lesh & the Terrapin Family Band, Twiddle and Midnight North on Sunday (July 22); Jackson Brown & the Midnight Ramble Band on Friday & Saturday, August 17 & 18; and Lake Street Dive on Friday, November 16.
