Greater Nippertown favorite Willie Nile brought his high-energy show to The Linda on Memorial Day Weekend, playing an array of hits from his vast catalog, including “Hell Yeah” and “Land of a Thousand Guitars.”
As Bob Dylan’s birthday occurred that weekend, Nile performed much of the material from his most recent release, Positively Bob, an album of Bob Dylan covers. And in concert the Dylan songs were interpreted with true rock and roll zeal. Fueled by a rock beat, such classic songs as “The Times They Are a-Changin’” and “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” were contemporized by Nile and his band. As Nile pointed out, the lyrics are unfortunately as vital and valid today as they were when Dylan was 21 years old. “Rainy Day Women #12 and 35” was a sing-along. The tempo was slowed for “Blowin’ in the Wind,” sung and played with the swaggering attitude of The Clash, adding a panicked urgency to a song that was originally a plea.
The 69-year-old Nile also showcased some songs from his soon to be released album, Children of Paradise. His rocking band – featuring guitarist Matt Hogan, bassist Johnny Pisano and drummer John Weber – added color and drive to the music, and most of the audience was up dancing or at least dancing in their chairs.
He truly enjoyed playing his concert and greeting his fans afterwards. And the fans certainly did, too. See you when you come around again, Willie. Hope it will be soon.
