SEEN/HEARD: Playlist, 4/9-15/18
Here’s a round-up of what we’ve been watching/listening to during the past week:
“Battlefield Earth” (Roger Christian, 2000) Yes, it’s just as astonishingly awful and incoherent as I remember. And John Travolta’s performance ranks as one of the all-time worst in cinema history.
“Loving Vincent” (Dorota Kobiela & Hugh Welchman, 2017) An investigation into the death of Vincent Van Gogh plays out as a standard mystery plot-wise, but the visual power of this entirely hand-painted animated film is as enthralling as it is ambitious.
“Revolt” (Joe Miale, 2017) Average post-apocalyptic/alien invasion tale, but set in rural Africa
“Detroit” (Kathryn Bigelow, 2017) Absolutely harrowing (and true) story of bad cops in the Motor City.
“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” (Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez, 2014) “Sin City” was a total knock-out, but the sequel disappoints…
“Bound by Flesh” (Leslie Zemeckis, 2012) Documentary about conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton
“Secret Agent” (Alfred Hitchcock, 1936) Continuing the immersion into the Hitchcock catalog
“L.A. Confidential” (Curtis Hanson, 1997) Sunny California neo-noir starring a pair of Aussies.
“La Antena (The Aerial)” (Esteban Sapir, 2007) Visually arresting Argentinian b&w film tells the story of a city that has lost its voice, stolen by Mr. TV.
