FEST: Albany Word Fest Kicks Off Tonight

April is National Poetry Month and in celebration, Albany Poets are presenting the 2018 Albany Word Fest featuring the poets and spoken word artists of Greater Nippertown during a week-long series of events that kicks off today (Monday, April 16). “Every year we celebrate National Poetry Month right here in Albany to highlight all of the talented writers, artists, and performers we have in the area,” said Thom Francis, Albany Poets President. “We want to honor the rich and vibrant poetry and spoken word community of Upstate New York.” Here’s the schedule of events for the 2018 Albany Word Fest: TODAY (MONDAY, APRIL 16), 7pm The Word Fest Night of Features Hudson River Coffee House, Albany The festival kicks off with an evening of poetry and prose featuring regional poets and writers Harvey Havel, Danielle Pouliot, Adam Tedesco, Joe Krausman, Poetyc Visionz and Olivia McKee. Hosted by Brian Dorn. WEDNESDAY (APRIL 18), 7pm D. Colin Restaurant Navona, Albany The Greater Nippertown poet, writer, artist and performer shares her work and then offers a Q&A session about life, inspirations, writing and more. THURSDAY (APRIL 19), 7pm Third Thursday Poetry Night Social Justice Center, Albany W.D. Clarke will be the featured reader. The evening also features an open mic for poets. FRIDAY (APRIL 20), 7pm Readings Against the End of the World UAlbany Downtown Campus’ Husted Hall Cafe, Albany The biggest event of the 2018 Albany Word Fest is the 24-hour read-a-thon to benefit the South End Children’s Cafe. All word-lovers and writers are invited to share readings – original work or favorite passages, poems and rants, raps and stories, spoken word and personal visions – during the marathon reading that features open mic sessions, featured readings and the launch of the sixth issue of Up the River. SUNDAY (APRIL 22), 2pm Word Fest Invitational Slam Troy Kitchen, Troy The Word Fest wraps up the Nitty Gritty Slam welcomes teams from all over the Northeast to compete for prizes and bragging rights in the sixth annual Word Fest slam session.
