ART!??!!! @ EMPAC at RPI
Why is there art? Why should anyone care? Isn’t everything art and everyone an artist? What is the place of art in this society and at RPI? And what is EMPAC’s place in all this? At 7pm On Wednesday (April 11), Johannes Goebel will host ART!??!!!, a dialogue on these and other questions at EMPAC at RPI in Troy.
The founding director of EMPAC, Goebel has published and lectured internationally on the arts, science, engineering, technology and aesthetics. He has participated in the integration of digital technology with contemporary artistic theory and practice over the past few decades. In 2001, Goebel was hired by RPI to direct the implementation of EMPAC, a bold new vision for trans-disciplinary research and artistic production at the nation’s oldest engineering university. In parallel and leading up to the completion of the landmark facility in 2008, Goebel laid the foundation for the artistic and research program including its unique artist-in-residence program, which, in its first decade has logged over 4,000 production days, presented over 600 cross-genre performances and commissioned more than 100 new time-based artworks across the disciplines of music, dance, theater and visual arts.
