MUSIC: Mike Musillami & Rich Syracuse @ Spring Street Gallery, Saratoga Springs. Capital District Jazz presents the guitar-and-bass duo in a CD release concert for Bird Calls, featuring adventurous interpretations of the iconic music of Charles Mingus. 7:30pm. $20.
MUSIC: Tal National @ The Falcon, Marlboro. The West African band pumps out high energy rock and roll on their latest album, Zoy Zoy, recorded in Niamey, Niger’s capital. With Common Tongue. 7pm. Donations encouraged.
THEATER: “Othello” @ Hudson Valley Community College Siek Campus Center’s Maureen Stapleton Theatre, Troy. Shakespeare & Company caps it ninth annual week-long residency with a 90-minute performance of Shakespeare’s tragic take of Othello, a powerful general of the Venetian army, whose life and marriage are ruined by a conniving, deceitful and envious soldier, named lago. 12noon. THEATER: “Les Miserables” @ Proctors, Schenectady. Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. 1:30 & 8pm. Through Sunday.
MUSIC: The Big Galut(e) @ UAlbany Performing Arts Center, Albany. The quintet – Robin Seletsky, Sasha Margolis, Michael Leopold, Mark Rubinstein and Richard Sosinsky – plays traditional Yiddish tunes, Hungarian dances, Klezmer originals and music by Gershwin and Rodgers & Hammerstein. 7:30pm. $20; students & seniors $15.
FILM: “The Illinois Parables” and Five Short Films @ Skidmore College’s Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs. Experimental filmmaker and professor at University of Illinois at Chicago, Deborah Stratman screens and discusses her work. Followed by a discussion with Skidmore faculty member Cecilia Maldorondo. 6pm. FREE.
