CANCELLED: Grand Re-Opening Concert at the TU Center

James Taylor won’t be there. Neither will John Legend. No Jim Belushi. And no Moriah Formica, either…

Intended as a celebration of the nearly $20 million in renovations, the grand re-opening concert at Albany’s Times Union Center, originally slated to take place on Friday evening (January 26), has been cancelled.

As posted on the Times Union Center’s website:

Due to unforeseen circumstances involving the promoter of the show, it is impossible for the performance scheduled to occur on January 26, 2018 at the Times Union Center to proceed. We apologize for any inconvenience. Refunds will be available at the original point of purchase immediately.

The arena’s management hopes to host a belated gala re-opening celebration at a later date…

Meanwhile, headliner James Taylor addressed the cancellation on Facebook:

I hate to cancel. It almost never happens. Maybe once or twice in the past 50 years.
So when we got the word on Friday that the Gala concert celebrating the re-opening of the Times Union Center in Albany, scheduled for next Friday, was off, I asked Sam, my manager, to try again to salvage the date. We had gone to great lengths to assemble the band and I was really looking forward to playing with them. Also, I didn’t want to disappoint the people who had bought tickets for the event.
I told Sam that, if the problem was financial, I’d forego my own fee so long as the band and crew got paid. I did, however, need my co-billed fellow performers to agree to show up assuming that the audience wanted to see them as much as they did me.
Sam told me he had spoken to John Legend’s management about saving the gig; I don’t know what happened beyond that…We held it for as long as we could but, in the end, had to let it go.
So disappointing. Not to overstate the importance of my performance to the people of Albany; “it’s only Rock & Roll” and, to be sure, this kind of snafu does happen from time to time, But, man, I hate to cancel…

Not exactly an auspicious way to debut the new arena. But again, this is Smalbany….this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to anyone in the area!

So was it the promoter, or was it John Legend holding out for more money? Or both? It’s a bummer either way, but it’s not like the TU hasn’t been doing business all along. The only thing that’s really had a “grand opening” are the sidewalks around the TU.

    Who’s the Promoter?

I was under the impression that all the details about a concert like this, including promoter/artist share is written in stone when the initial riders are signed. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
