LIVE: The Chuck Lamb Trio @ Caffe Lena, 12/5/17
Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
Pianist and series curator Chuck Lamb and the well-known rhythm section of drummer Jeff Siegel and bassist Rich Syracuse accompanied Juris.
The band played two varied sets of standards, modern pop songs and originals. Lamb took turns with Juris playing melodies, harmonies and comping, backed by the steady rhythm section with occasional embellishments, accents and solos.
Of particular note was a truly beautiful, melodic version of The Beatles’ White Album classic “Julia.”
In contrast was a unique interpretation of Donovan’s psychedelic era “Sunshine Superman,” with Juris adding plenty of electronic effects into his guitar work with Lamb pounding out jagged piano lines while the entire band rocked out, giving this dated song a surprisingly contemporary lift. The band was crying out, “We can rock, too”!
All in all, an enjoyable evening with a quartet of virtuosos. The Caffe Lena jazz series continues tonight (Tuesday, January 2) with special guest alto saxophonist Dick Oatts joining the Chuck Lamb Trio.
