This Week’s New Concert Announcements

Led by singer-songwriter John Darnielle, acclaimed indie band the Mountain Goats are headed into the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park at 8pm on Saturday, April 21. Priced at $20 in advance; $23 at the door, tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday (November 3).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: It hasn’t been a good year for the College of Saint Rose’s Massry Center for the Arts in Albany. First, last month’s concert by Marc Cohn was postponed at the last minute. Then last week, the concert scheduled for last weekend by Gedeon Luke & The People was cancelled. But things are beginning to look a little brighter – the Cohn concert has now been re-scheduled for 8pm on Tuesday, February 20.

Sawyer Fredericks will be stepping into the spotlight at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton at 7pm on Friday, December 15. Priced at $20 in advance; $25 at the door, tickets go on sale on Friday (November 3). And still led by founding member Don Wilson, pioneering guitar heroes The Ventures take the stage at 7pm on Saturday, January 20. Tickets are on sale now priced at $30 in advance; $35 at the door.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Brad Mehldau Trio returns to The Egg with another exciting dose of 21st century piano jazz. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 11am on Friday (November 3).

UPDATE: Brandi Carlile’s solo benefit concert at The Bardavon in Poughkeepsie on Sunday, November 12 got even more interesting with the announcement that the concert will also feature Sweet Marie, Simi Stone, Sean Rowe and Ian Felice. All funds go to the Radio Woodstock Cares Foundation for local breast cancer care, research facilities and hospitals in the Hudson Valley.

The Skivvies – the duo of Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley – will perform stripped down arrangements of eclectic covers and eccentric originals at Club Helsinki in Hudson at 8pm on Friday, December 29. Not only is the music stripped down – cello, ukulele, glockenspiel, melodica – but the Skivvies literally strip down to their underwear to perform the benefit concert for Hudson’s cat rescue Animalkind. Tickets are $25 & $60.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Egg announced two more new concerts – the ever-eclectic Andrew Bird (on sale at 11am on Friday) and the Mendelssohn Club of Albany’s annual holiday concert (on sale now).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Talking Heads tribute band Start Making Sense have been regulars on Greater Nippertown’s club for several years, but soon they’ll be making their area theater debut at the Cohoes Music Hall. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday (November 3).

Professor Louie & the Crowmatix (with the added kick of the Woodstock Horns) celebrate the music of The Band’s Rick Danko with a special birthday tribute concert at the Bearsville Theater on Wednesday, December 27. Tickets are $15 in advance; $20 at the door.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: David Bromberg and Jerry Douglas team up for a double-bill evening of solo performances at The Egg. Tickets are on sale now.

Sixties pop thrush Petula Clark takes the stage at the Calvin Theatre at 8pm on Friday, December 22 ($35.50 & $45.50; VIP $75.50). And if you missed folk super-trio Cry Cry Cry – featuring Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell and Dar Williams – at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall last weekend, you’ll have another chance at the Calvin on Saturday, March 31. Priced at $39.50 & $49.50, tickets go on sale on Friday (November 3).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Thomas Rhett is bringing his Life Changes Tour to Albany’s Times Union Center, along with support acts Brett Young and Midland.

Albany’s Hollow Bar + Kitchen has bolstered its concert schedule with a couple of new additions – pop-punks Broadside at 8:30pm on Friday, December 15 ($14) and the adventurous San Fermin at 9pm on Friday January 25 ($12 in advance; $14 at the door).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: New Orleans jazz piano great Marcus Roberts teams up with broadcaster/author Tavis Smiley at Proctors in Schenectady for “Death of a King,” the live “multi-media theatrical experience” about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

OPENERS: Yes Darling (the duo of Ryan Montbleau and Hayley Jane) has snagged the opening slot for Everyone Orchestra at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs on Saturday (November 4)… The Tom Hamilton Duo will open for Donna the Buffalo at the Cohoes Music Hall on Friday, December 1… Colony House and Tall Heights have singed on as support for Judah the Lion at the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park at 8pm on Tuesday, March 13…
