Adventurous trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is bringing his quartet to Troy at 8pm on Wednesday (August 16) to wrap up EMPAC at RPI’s inaugural summer season, and it promises to be a performance that no forward-thinking music fan is going to want to miss.
At age 19, Akinmusire began touring professionally with saxophonist Steve Coleman, before studying with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terrence Blanchard. In 2007, he won both the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. Since then, he’s worked with jazz icons from Vijay Iyer and Aaron Parks to Esperanza Spalding and Jason Moran, recording three albums as a bandleader, including his brand new A Rift in Decorum: Live at the Village Vanguard. In 2015, he contributed to rapper Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-nominated album To Pimp a Butterfly.
At EMPAC at RPI, he will be joined by his longtime band featuring Sam Harris (piano), Harish Raghavan (bass) and Justin Brown (drums).
Tickets are on sale now, priced at $18; $13 for students & seniors.
