12/10/16: Today’s Top Tips: Saturday
Happy birthday, Dennis Herbert!
MUSIC: Dinosaur Jr. @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. If Neil Young is, as Kurt Cobain said, “the Godfather of Grunge,” Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis is his consiglieri — a mastermind whose screaming, crunching guitar ushered in an era and helped define alt-rock in the 1990s. And Dino Jr. has still got it, re-emerging in the last few years to assume their proper mantel as elder statesmen of viscerally bad-ass rock ‘n’ roll. With Luluc and the last minute addition of Sunburned Hand of the Man. 8pm. $36 & $46. PS: Today is also J Mascis’ birthday…
MUSIC: Del & Dawg @ EMPAC at RPI, Troy. A half century ago, two future bluegrass legends – Del McCoury and David Grisman – played their first gig together at RPI in Troy. Celebrating that 50th anniversary, they’re back (joined by special guests Jerry McCoury and Chris Warner for the second half of the evening) to whip up that classic high lonesome sound, and maybe some jazzy Dawg music, too. 8pm. $36, $46 & $59.
