LIVE: Counting Crows @ SPAC, 8/15/16

For Counting Crows, it may not seem like a huge leap from the long defunct Saratoga Winners (where they made their Greater Nippertown debut) to Saratoga Performing Arts Center (where they continue to make almost annual appearances).
But over the course of their 25-year musical career together, frontman Adam Duritz & Co. have managed to maintain (and even grow) their fan base without becoming rock star cliches.
And if that means delivering a show where the deep album cuts easily outnumbered the hits – like the one they performed at SPAC earlier this month – well, so be it.
Rob Thomas, on the other hand, was givin’ the people what they want – hits from Matchbox Twenty, his solo career and his all-star collaborations.
And K Phillips & the Concho Pearls go the party started with a blast twang-flavored blues-rock.
A little something for everyone…
Excerpt from Kirsten Ferguson’s review at The Daily Gazette: “‘We’re just not going to be that band that plays all the stuff you know,’ said Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, actually using a more colorful word to vent his frustration at fans who called out for hits during the band’s set at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Monday night. The alt-rockers, who rose to popularity after their massively successful debut album August and Everything After landed in 1993, really didn’t get to a well-known hit (‘Round Here’) until more than halfway through their 19-song SPAC performance. Instead they mostly showcased lesser known-numbers like blues rocker ‘Sessions,’ the twangy ‘Mercy’ and ‘Le Ballet d’Or,’ a song that originated in the band’s days of playing in San Francisco basements.”
