Attracting more than 6,000 fans to Joe’s Field, the National set a new attendance record for a single-day event at the sprawling MASS MoCA campus in North Adams. The show was a one-off before they headed over the Atlantic for handful of dates across Europe.

And generously, the show was also a benefit concert with proceeds going to the Ghent-based Hawthorne Valley Association and MASS MoCA.

Of course, the concert featured a tip o’ the hat to Day of the Dead, the years-in-the-making Grateful Dead tribute, six-hour-long all-star box set that the band helmed. But augmented by a horn section, the National didn’t dwell in the land of the Dead, and considering that it was the band’s only Northeast concert appearance, fans reveled in

San Francisco-based post-popsters Yassou opened the show, although festivities got underway earlier with an exclusive pre-concert party, “Drinks with the National.”
