Music & Laughs: The Malling of Entertainment
As more and more consumers are doing the majority of their shopping online, big malls are looking for alternative means of getting them to shut down their computers. And one way of attracting them is with entertainment…
Last year, the Funny Bone Comedy Club opened at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, and ever since the club has been presenting a steady stream of national A-list stand-up comedians, as well as supporting the Local 518 comedy community. Highlights of Funny Bone’s upcoming comedy calendar include the veteran Dick Gregory on Tuesday (June 14), SNL alum Jon Lovitz (Thursday-Saturday, June 23-25) and Pauly Shore (Friday & Saturday, July 8 & 9).
Lucky Strike Social opened at Crossgates Mall last week, and their first big show has been announced – an all-ages concert by pop singer Charlie Puth is slated for the Social’s 900-person-capacity Jupiter Hall at 7:30pm on Tuesday, June 21 in support of his recently released debut album, Nine Track Mind. Puth is best known for “See You Again,” his No. 1 hit collaboration with Wiz Khalifa, which earned him three Grammy nominations (including Song of the Year), two American Music nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. Opening the show will be Timeflies. Tickets are currently on sale priced at $26 in advance; $28 at the door.
Also at Crossgates, another new performance venue is slated to open later this month, but Rascals has booked its first act. Glenn Hughes – Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee as a member of Deep Purple and the self-proclaimed “Voice of Rock” – is scheduled to step into the spotlight at the 500-person-capacity on Friday, August 19. Blues-rock singer-guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor is slated to open the show. Tickets are currently available for $25.
And while we’re on the topic of mall entertainment, there are laughs on tap at the Social House in Via Port-Rotterdam (formerly the Rotterdam Square Mall) in Schenectady. Upcoming comedy nights include Max Dolcelli and Liz Russo with host Dee Watson at 7:30 & 9:30pm on Saturday, June 18; Chris Coccia and Kevin Domnbrowski with host Frank Gentile at 7:30 & 9:30pm on Saturday, June 25; and Johnny Rizzo and Mark Walton with host Zach Swan at 7:30 & 9:30pm on Saturday, July 9. Tickets for each of the shows are currently available for $15 in advance; $20 at the door.
