Sanctuary for Independent Media Announces Spring Schedule of Concerts, Events
The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy is celebrating its tenth anniversary with an array of musical performances, films, speakers, workshops, a new gallery show and Freedom Festival at Freedom Square this spring.
The newly announced spring season of events kicks off with the bold and uncompromising Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited, his legendary nine-piece dance band from Zimbabwe. Throughout the season, the Sanctuary will also host a concert by breakout African singer Fatoumata Diawara, a talk by “Democracy Now!” host Amy Goodman, a screening of the new film “Nuts!” by Sundance sensation Penny Lane, a Super Secret brunch with the Yes Men and more…

Saturday, April 2, 8pm ($20)
THOMAS MAPFUMO & THE BLACKS UNLIMITED

Hero of the anti-apartheid movement in Rhodesia, then exiled from Zimbabwe because of his vocal criticism of government corruption, the legendary composer, guitarist and singer Thomas Mapfumo leads one of the world’s most dangerous dance bands – a nine-piece ensemble celebrating the past, present and future of African music.

Perpetuating Mali’s rich traditions with a spectacular contemporary sound all her own, Fatoumata Diawara fought the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout the continent and parental opposition to her artistic ambitions to win success as an actress in film and theater before finding her feet in
the medium she was always destined to make her own: music.

TROY BIKE RESCUE ANNIVERSARY GATHERING
Our neighbors at Troy Bike Rescue have been recycling bicycles and building community in the Collar City for 15 years, and leading the fight locally for sustainable urban infrastructure. Join the volunteers this bike month in a celebratory gathering complete with the traditional burrito bar, local

PENNY LANE’S “NUTS”
Sundance Film Festival sensation (and Sanctuary co-founder) Penny Lane presents “Nuts!,” her good old story about a big fat liar, some goat balls and a million-watt radio station — an opportunity for viewers to actively wrestle with the ethical and epistemological issues central to the narrative nonfiction form. Because who says smart films have to be boring?

A SUPER SECRET BRUNCH WITH XXXXXX XXXXXXX HOSTED BY THE YES MEN
World-reknowned information liberator XXXXXXX XXXXXXX will speak about privacy and surveillance, revealing XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXX and its effects on XXXXX XXXXXXXXXX and XXXXXXX. This will be the highlight of a brunch experience hosted by the Yes Men who will, for the first time, reveal XXXXXXXXXXXXX. The ingredients will be hand-gathered by Anonymous food-hackers and prepared using secret recipes collected by the Yes Men from notable privacy activists.
