You could call it Best Bets, Prime Picks, Top Tips or whatever. We call it The Dozen, whereby we offer a monthly round-up of 12 (or so) of the shows around Greater Nippertown that have got us jazzed the most. One entry per venue. Of course, your results may vary, so please feel free to weigh in on what you think we missed or overlooked.
Here’s The Dozen for the month of February:
THURSDAY (FEBRUARY 4): Jill Sobule @ Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton. The literate and witty singer-songwriter is so much more than just her off-beat 1995 hit, “I Kissed a Girl.” Just listen to her latest album, Dottie’s Charms. With Carrie Ferguson. 7pm. $20.
FRIDAY (FEBRUARY 5): Mardi Gras Festival @ Proctors’ GE Theatre, Schenectady. After a lengthy hiatus, the annual Mardi Gras party returns to Proctors with bona fide Louisiana music by Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys and Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole at 8pm. The pre-concert party in Proctors’ Arcade starts at 6pm with Cajun cuisine, Hurricanes & cocktails, a drag queen parade, second line music and beads. $40.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band @ Times Union Center, Albany. Yes, the Boss is back, roaring into town in support of his whopping box set, The Ties That Bind: The River Collection. 7:30pm. $58, $108 & $153. UPDATE: This show is officially sold out.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9: The Dylan Perrillo Orchestra @ the Parish Public House, Albany. It’s a swinging Mardi Gras party fueled by some vintage jazz. 9pm. (Also at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs at 7pm on Sunday, February 28 with Banshee Tree. $20.)
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13: Sonny Landreth & Cindy Cashdollar @ The Egg’s Swyer Theatre, Albany. An evening in slide guitar heaven with two masters – Sonny Landreth on electric guitar and Cindy Cashdollar on Dobro and lap-steel – performing together. 8pm. $29.50.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15: Ramblin Jug Stompers @ McGeary’s Pub, Albany. Greater Nippertown’s premier jug band celebrates their 10th anniversary, Presidents Day and Grammy Awards Night all at once – anything could happen. 7pm. FREE.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18: Kurt Vile & the Violators @ Pearl Street Ballroom, Northampton. In support of their latest album, b’lieve i’m goin down, which landed on many a Best of 2015 lists. With Xylouris White. 8:30pm. $20.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19: Mipso @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The North Carolina quartet brings their four-part vocal harmonies and “renegade traditional” sound to town in support of their sophomore album, Old Time Reverie. 8pm. $18 in advance; $20 at the door.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20: “The Lady at the Mic” @ Bridge Street Theatre, Catskill. Charles Busch’s latest one-man cabaret show gets a try-out before officially debuting at Lincoln Center later this month. 6pm. $40. UPDATE: This show is officially sold out. (Also at Club Helsinki in Hudson at 7pm on Sunday, February 21. $60.)
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26: Robert Glasper Trio @ Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center, Saratoga Springs. Jazz meets contemporary R&B when the Grammy Award-winning pianist-producer-composer brings his band to the Spa City in support of his latest album, Covered: The Robert Glasper Trio Recorded Live at Capitol Studios. 8pm. $8; $5 students & seniors.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26: The Erotics @ the Low Beat, Albany. Mike Trash and the boys celebrate their 20th anniversary. And that’s a whole lotta serious rockin’. With Blackcat Elliot and Society High. 8pm. $7.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26: Bridge Jazz Festival @ Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Troy. The fest is back for its second year featuring vocalist Nnenna Freelon, guitarist extraordinaire Pierre Bensusan and Local 518 faves the Tim Olsen and Eric Walentowicz Duo. 7:30pm. $28, $36 & $42.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26: Sarah Borges @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. Bringing a full band along with her, the soulful sparkplug singer-songwriter celebrates the release of her new CD, Good & Dirty. With Eric “Roscoe” Ambel. 9pm.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27: Bridge Jazz Festival @ College of St. Rose’s Massry Center, Albany. Crossing the Hudson River (hence the name of the fest), night two features the Arch Stanton Quartet, the No BS! Brass Band and Delfeayo & Ellis Marsalis of the famed New Orleans jazz family. 7pm. $40; $30 students.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27: Del & Dawg @ Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Great Barrington. Bluegrass greats Del McCoury and David Grisman team up with a special concert in honor of the 50th anniversary of their first show together as a duo. 8pm. $34, $54 & $79.
