Review and photographs by Rudy Lu

As always, the theme was percussion-based music of all manners, rhythms and cultures at the biennial Drum Boogie Festival in Woodstock’s Andy Lee Field. Presented by the Woodstock Chimes Fund, this free family festival featured performers such as:

A percussion orchestra and dance company…
The Great American Fife and Drum Band
A gamelan orchestra with dancers…
Tabla drumming by Aanadhha
The solo vibraphone of Joe Locke
An all female Taiko drum-and-tap dance performance by Cobu
A trio featuring Grammy Award-winning drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Matt Garrison and kora-playing griot Foday Musa Susa
The Caribbean steel drum band NYU Steel
Western and Southern African-based sounds of Mandara with Valerie Dee Naranjo
The reggae of the Big Takeover

The music continued on the two stages despite a heavy downpour that occurred during the middle of the festival, thanks to the careful planning of having both stages covered, as well as tents for both the performers and the audience.
