FREE: September in the City Art Fair
Yes, believe it or not, today is the last day of August. But fear not, there’s still a bunch of great free music coming our way in September…
Sponsored by the City of Albany, Albany Center Gallery and WEXT 97.7FM, the mid-week lunchtime event series will feature an outdoor exhibition of artwork by a variety of Local 518 artists and crafters, as well as live musical performances from 11:30am-2pm each week, beginning on Wednesday (September 2). Admission is free.
Here’s the schedule of musical performers for the 2015 September in the City Art Fair series:
WEDNESDAY (SEPTEMBER 2)
Two Guys is an indie folk-rock duo formed in 2013 in Troy. Eric Braymer and Ron Burris make an unlikely folk group – two upstate New York musicians with 20 years of heavy metal behind them. Braymer has traded in his Fender Strat for an acoustic guitar driven through a dubious array of effects pedals, while Burris now coaxes scratchy beats out of his drum kit using brushes, beaters and a heavy foot on a big bass drum. Two Guys’ debut album Ghosts & Angels was produced by UK punk pioneer Wreckless Eric, who struck up an acquaintance with the band after witnessing their debut show at Troy’s River Street Beat Shop.
Born in raised in Amsterdam, NY, Sarah Bogran is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who began crafting her own music as a teenager. With a wide range of influences ranging from classic rock icons Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie to modern iconoclasts Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Sigur Ros, Bogran distills her inspirations into passionate original compositions driven by her skillful guitar playing and powerful vocals.
Nick and Pedro began collaborating in May 2014, forming Boxed Hemmond. Pedro leads harmony with lightning fast lines and arpeggios on the cuatro while Nick fills in the rhythm section on guitar and belts the lead vocals. Nick has been writing songs since high school, and has built a catalog steadily ever since. Pedro has played in bands for many years as a percussionist, bassist and cuatro player. Their brand of guttural, mechanistic acoustic chugging and carefully-placed melodic intricacy provide an engaging listening experience.
KoriSoron is an instrumental acoustic trio that combines rock and progressive influences with musical traditions from across the globe. Guitarists Scott Collins (featured performer on the God of War 2 and Trials Evolution video games), Farzad Golpayegani (guitarist and composer for the Quest of Persia: Nader’s Blade and Garshasp video games) and percussionist Dean Mirabito bring international touring and recording experience to the Local 518 band.
With special guest Angela Bove
For Accents, a Local 518 folk rock quartet, writing music has always been about sincerity. Featuring a pair of husband-and-wife duos, the group showcases lush harmonies thanks to their three vocalists – TJ Foster, Lauren Foster and Ashleigh Whitfield – as well as soaring guitars from Jordan Stewart. Their critically acclaimed sophomore record Tall Tales and follow-up EP Small Tales were released in 2014 on the indie label, Deep Elm Records. Angela Bove is a Schenectady singer-songwriter who accompanies her passionate voice on ukulele and guitar.
