6/16/15: Today’s Top Tips: Tuesday
MUSIC: The Ginger Baker Jazz Confusion @ The Egg, Albany. The super-drummer was the driver of such rock super-groups as Cream, Blind Faith, Ginger Baker’s Air Force and the Baker/Gurvitz Army. This time around he’s joined by funk giant (and former James Brown bandleader) Pee Wee Ellis on saxophone, jazz bassist extraordinaire Alec Dankworth and Ghanian percussion powerhouse Abass Dodoo for an evening of improvisational music melding jazz, Afrobeat and psychedelic blues-rock. 7:30pm. $38.
THEATER: “Kinky Boots” @ Proctors, Schenectady. It’s opening night! The six-time Tony Award-winning musical by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein musical follows a struggling shoe factory owner who works to turn his business around with help from Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. Together, the unlikely pair discovers that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world. 7:30pm. $25-$90. Through Sunday.
MUSIC: Will Guthrie @ Upstate Artists Guild, Albany. The Australian drummer is currently living in France, but he’s in the U.S, for 14 solo shows, including this one tonight. With Mensheviks, Albany’s improvisational quartet with a heavy emphasis on electronics. 8pm. $5.
THEATER: “Man of La Mancha” @ Barrington Stage Company, Pittsfield. Director Julianne Boyd puts a fresh spin of the musical tale about tilting at windmills and dreaming the impossible dream, starring Jeff McCarthy. 7pm.
