The annual Albany Jazz Appreciation Month Celebration took place last month at the Colonie Elks Lodge in Latham, and it was a mighty impressive exhibition of the deep well of Nippertown’s jazz talent, as well as the diversity of music that falls under the broad umbrella of “jazz.”
The day-long jazz extravaganza featured big band music by the UAlbany Jazz Ensemble under the direction of David Holsey, the exotic world-music of Elizabeth Woodbury Kasius & Heard, the Andrews Sisters-like, swinging vocal harmonies of String of Pearls, the traditional New Orleans sound of the Pearl River Trio (augmented for the day by washboardist Jerry Gordon) and the jazz violin of the Teresa Broadwell Quintet.
Wrapping up the festivities were organist Aikiko and trumpet master Joe Magnarelli (who were married just two days earlier), and their bandmates Myron Walden (sax) and Rudy Petschauer (drums), pumping out some big-burn bop.
Co-sponsored by the Albany Musicians’ Association and the Swingtime Jazz Society, the event also celebrated the 30th anniversary of Bill McCann’s radio show “The Saturday Morning Edition of Jazz” on WCDB-FM. Additional honorees included jazz writers J Hunter and Greg Haymes of Nippertown.com and Tom Pierce of AlbanyJazz.com.
