How do you make a Good Friday even better? Throw Robert Randolph & His Family Band onstage and let ’em cut loose with their rip-roaring melange of blues, rock, funk and gospel. If you were at Saratoga Springs’ Putnam Den, well then, you know what I mean.
Steel guitar master Randolph and his funky crew are no strangers to Greater Nippertown, having played a wide variety of Local 518 venues big and small since the days of ye olde Saratoga Winners. And they never disappoint.
In addition to spotlighting selections from the band’s latest album, Lickety Split – most notably with a no-holds-barred rendition of “Brand New Wayo” – Randolph pulled out a tasty mix of covers that stretched from Bill Withers’ “Use Me” to Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile,” insuring that the crowd was gonna go home at the end of the night exhausted from dancing but with a huge smiles on their faces.
The Dave Spadaro Group opened the show with some fireworks of their own, as they celebrated the recent release of their self-titled debut album.
