MUSIC: Don Julin & Billy Strings @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The incendiary American roots duo harkens back to the days when bluegrass was a rough-and-tumble art form. Drenched in sweat, grimacing and howling like a bluegrass berserker and picking his guitar with absolute ferocity, Billy Strings is a youngster from Michigan, where he met veteran mando-man Don Julin. The Bluegrass Situation calls ’em “the unholy child of Pantera and Tony Rice.” 7pm.

MUSIC: Joan Osborne @ the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. What a voice. In addition to her stellar solo career, she’s also been a singer with the Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends and Trigger Hippy. MUSIC: SHEL @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. The folk-pop group of sisters – Sarah (violin, bass), Hannah (piano, keyboards, accordion), Eva (mandolin, cello, guitar, banjo), and Liza (drums, beatboxing), hence the name of the band – returns for a double-bill with acoustic grunge-rock singer-songwriter Otan Vargas. 9pm. $18.
