LIVE: Upstate @ the Falcon, 11/24/14
Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
The band features Argentinean composer-pianist Guillermo Klein, singer-songwriter Rebecca Martin and virtuoso bassist Larry Grenadier, backed by journeyman drummer Lee Falco. Joining them last week as special guest was Portuguese vocalist Sara Serpa.
As would be expected, the resulting music defied easy categorization. The sometimes dissonant and unusual harmonies brought to mind such words as atmospheric, ethereal, spiritual, airy, other-worldly and timeless.
Included in the evening’s set list were compositions by Brad Mehldau and Kurt Rosenwinkel, as well as originals by the bandmembers.
Upstate’s residency at the Falcon continues tonight (Monday, December 1) with Diego Urbano on vibraphone. On Monday, December 8, Klein leads “Rhythmic Illusions & Symmetrical Harmonies,” a workshop performance with percussionists Brian Adler, Felipe Fournier and Fernando Garcia, as well as keyboardist-vocalist Akiko Pavolka and special contributor Donna Mikkelsen creating live, ambidextrous painting. Upstate returns to wrap up the series with performances on Mondays, December 15 & 22, joined by special guest tenor saxmen Chris Cheek and Mark Turner. All performances start at 7pm; donations encouraged.
