MUSIC: The Compact @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. Led by the songwriting team of guitarist/vocalist Erin Hobson and bassist/vocalist Steven Ross, the Compact celebrates the release of their new album, One at a Time, with a CD release party. 8pm. $15. EVENT: “Project Screenplay” @ MASS MoCA Club B-10, North Adams. A live-action game show about the art of the pitch hosted by screenwriter Andrew Osborne. You decide who gets the green light when aspiring screen scribes pitch the audience and act out scenes while industry pros offer tips and advice for bringing a script from page to projector. 7pm. $15 & $22.
MUSIC: AJR @ the Hollow Bar + Kitchen, Albany. Following their performance at SPAC back in June, the NYC-based pop trio of brothers returns to town for a considerably more intimate show in support of their new EP, Infinity. With Minor Soul. 8pm. $18.
MUSIC: The Dover Quartet @ Williams College’s Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall, Williamstown. An evening of chamber music featuring Haydn’s Quartet in G Major, op. 76, No. 1; Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 7; and Beethoven’s Quartet in E-flat major, op. 127. 8pm. FREE.
TALK: Luca Turin @ EMPAC at RPI, Troy. The biophysicist offers the talk, “Why Does Consciousness Dissolve in Chloroform? The Story of an Enduring Mystery” as he investigates one of the stranger mysteries of human consciousness, utilizing images and 3D animations to share the many unusual discoveries from his research with general anesthesia and its influence an internal sense of duration. What is time? Does our understanding of time depend on the human mind in some fundamental way? 7pm. FREE.
