10/31/14: Today’s Tips: Friday (Halloween)
MUSIC: Renaissance @ The Egg, Albany. Annie Haslam leads the band – keyboardists Rave Tesar and Tom Brislin, bassist David J. Keyes, drummer Frank Pagano and guitarist Ryche Chlanda – serve up an evening of prog-rock classics and songs from their new album, A Symphony of Light. 8pm. $38.
MUSIC: Built4BBQ’s Whole Hog Halloween Bash @ Pauly’s Hotel, Albany. The second annual bash features the album release of Barroom Weather by Local 518 country-blues troubadour Henry’s Rifle, as well as sets by Rival Galaxies, Kimono Dragons and Hammer Hawk. Costumes, candy and between-band Halloween jams from DJ Mercy. Doors open at 7pm. $5.
MUSIC: Consider the Source @ the Parish Public House, Albany. It’s the CD release party for the self-decsribed “sci-fi middle eastern fusion” band’s new disc, Put Another Rock in That Bag, the first installment of the planned three-DC set, World War Trio. With Mister F. 9:30pm. $15.
MUSIC: The Ed Palermo Big Band Halloween @ the Falcon, Marlboro. Ed Palermo’s big band doesn’t fire up Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey or even Woody Herman. But rather they dig into the repertoire of Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Todd Rundgren, Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield. Mindboggling stuff. 7pm. Donations encouraged.
MUSIC: Hunter Hayes @ the Times Union Center, Albany. The country music up-and-comer and four-time Grammy nominee brings his Tattoo (Your Name) Tour to town. With Dan + Shay and the Railers. 7pm. $29.50-$42.
THEATER: “Evil Dead: The Musical” @ Uncle Sam Atrium, Troy. Singing zombies. Dancing dead. Splattering blood. Director Erin Giacomino helms the Troy Civic Theatre’s production of the camp/horror musical based on Sam Rami’s 1983 film. 8pm. $15; $13 students & seniors. Through November 9.
ARTS WALK: Troy Night Out @ various locations, Troy. With a trick-or-treat theme, naturally… 5-9pm. FREE.
MUSIC: Alan Chartock & the Berkshire Ramblers @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. It’s an old-fashioned Halloween Hooo-tenanny to benefit Caffè Lena. This big family band captures the essence of folk music with familiar songs that celebrate togetherness, and all are warmly invited to lend a voice on the chorus. Your ticket includes hearty snacks, desserts and beverages of the soft variety. Folk-inspired costumes encouraged. 8pm. $35.
FILM: “20,000 Days on Earth” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. Drama and reality combine in Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s 2014 film covering a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and cultural icon Nick Cave, with startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process. 7:45pm.
