LIVE: The Eddie Henderson Quintet @ the Falcon, 10/17/14
Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
Last week at the Falcon in Marlboro, veteran trumpeter Eddie Henderson lead his all-star quintet through a powerhouse set of jazz featuring both standards and compositions by his band members and his wife Netsuko. A mix of both ballads and post-bop generously featured the virtuosity of each of the members of the band.
George Cables – who was nicknamed “Mr. Wonderful” by one of his employers, Art Pepper – provided imaginative comping and solos on piano. Rounding out the combo were saxophonist Gary Bartz (who has played with Art Blakey, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner), drummer Billy Drummond (who has played with Steve Kuhn, Sheila Jordan, Carla Bley) and bassist Ed Howard (who has played with Roy Haynes and Clifford Jordan).
Arizona-based singer-songwriter Kathleen Grace opened the show in support of her latest album, No Place to Fall, performing her original songs in a trio format with another guitar player and bassist.
