Festival Fever: O+ Festival in Kingston, 10/10-12/14
Featuring more than 40 musical acts and 20 visual artists, the fifth annual O+ Festival will be taking place this weekend at a number of different locations throughout Kingston. It’s a unique festival of art, music and wellness, wherein artists barter their contributions directly for medical, dental and other health services from art-loving health care providers.
The festival kicks off with a parade from Academy Green at 6pm Friday (October 10), and other activities throughout the weekend include a wellness ExpO+, children’s programming, and ExplO+re — classes in Yoga, Gong Sound Healing, Meditation, Dance and QiGong. New events for 2014 include Tin Roof Sessions, a dance party in collaboration with Chronogram magazine, a mural-to-mural bike ride for all ages, an 18- and 28-mile rail trail ride, and a 50-mile road ride for cycling enthusiasts.
Among the fest’s performers are Freeman (aka Aaron Freeman aka Gene Ween of Ween), Tony Levin’s Stick Men, Matt Pond, Amy Helm & the Handsome Strangers, Flaws, the Bones of JR Jones, the Paul Green Rock Academy, kindie band Ratboy Jr., Bella’s Bartok, festival favorite Monogold and “Shiva Arms,” a one-man play written and performed by Doug Motel.
Other musical highlights include NYC folk-singer Kevin Devine (New York); Xylouris White (which features frequent PJ Harvey/Nick Cave collaborator Jim White and Greek lutenist George Xylouris); Brooklyn electro-pop act Young Magic; a special collaboration between drummer Ben Perowsky and neo-soul/rap sensation TK Wonder; Brooklyn band Landlady; Providence anti-folk collective Arc Iris; and Albany faves Hand Habits.
