Behind the Scenes with “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” at Shakespeare & Company [Berkshire on Stage]
By Larry Murray
As adept as they are at performing the works of William Shakespeare with style and panache, the artists at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox also like a healthy dose of hilarity, heart and humility in their annual theatrical schedule. So this year it is the ridiculously delightful Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike that will evoke the laughs in the contemporary play department. V&S&M&S joined the Bernstein repertory with director Matthew Penn at the helm on Wednesday (August 6) and continues through September 14.
We had a chance to sit in on a rehearsal of Christopher Durang’s Tony-award winning homage to Chekhov and can verify that this little gem leaves no stone unturned when it comes to family dynamics, sibling rivalries, love, lust, hopes and dreams. As they like to say in the S&Co pr department, “It’s a razor sharp comedy.”
And a satire, too, in the spirit of a failed yet hilarious term paper translation.
