10/9/12: Today’s Tips: Tuesday
MUSIC: Dan Johnson & the Expert Sidemen @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. After nearly two years of hosting the Americana Tuesday series, DJ&ES are taking a break to promote their brand-spankin’ new album, Sleep On the Way. So this might be the last bash for a while. In addition to DJ&ES, the evening will feature David Kraai & Amy Laber (celebrating the release of his new album Country Dreamer) and Ian Dunlop (of Gram Parsons’ legendary International Submarine Band). 8pm. $5.
MUSIC/MORE: “Plan of the City” @ Williams College’s Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall, Williamstown. A performance by the NOW Ensemble, a dynamic group of performers and composers dedicated to making new, multimedia chamber music for the 21st century – with a unique instrumentation of flute, clarinet, electric guitar, double bass and piano – combining talks, a film and music. 8pm. FREE.
MUSIC: Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys @ the Ale House, Troy. Mixing up American roots music, western swing, rockabilly and traditional country twang, Big Sandy and the boys roll into the Ale House in support of their latest album, Turntable Matinee. 8pm. $15.
MUSIC: Brian Melick @ the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy. Utilizing both the udu drum and the earth drum (created from pulp), master percussionist Melick will be creating a new work, “Paper & Clay.” 5:30pm. FREE.
READING: James Mann @ UAlbany Campus Center Assembly Hall, Albany. The journalist, author and Albany native reads from his new book, “The Obamians: The Struggle Inside the White House to Redefine American Power.” 8pm. FREE. Also a free seminar at the same venue at 4:15pm.
