MUSIC: “Melodies of Christmas” @ Proctors, Schenectady. It’s opening night for the 32nd annual celebration of holiday music featuring the Empire State Orchestra and Youth Choral. With the McKrells, the Orlando School of Dance and more. 7pm. $15, $25. Through Sunday, December 18.

MUSIC: Frank Jaklitsch & Friends @ the Irish Mist, Troy. In support of his new holiday CD, “One Small Child,” Jaklitsch welcomes a batch of friends and special guests, including the 3 Irish Voices, Amy Collins and the Sons & Daughters of Erin Pipe Band. A benefit for the Vineyard Church in Cohoes. 7pm. $10.

FILM: “Buck” @ The Linda, Albany. The Food for thought film series continues with the documentary that follows Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems. Doors at 6pm; film at 7pm. $6.

READING: Third Thursday Poetry Reading @ the Social Justice Center, Albany. Hosted by Dan Wilcox, the evening includes an open mic for readers as well as the spotlight performer Murrow (which features Thom Francis on word and Keith Spencer on guitar). Sign-up at 7pm; reading at 7:30pm. $3.
